"To All AHS Staff and Physicians:

Beginning last Friday (Feb. 7), we have been experiencing slow-downs to computer network access across the province, and especially in Calgary and Edmonton. Some analysis of the issue shows that the slow-downs are related to significant use of the network to stream video, including coverage of the Sochi 2014 Olympics. While we very much appreciate the great spirit our staff is showing in their support of Canada’s Olympic team, we have to ensure that our clinical and business systems are not being impacted.

When large amounts of video are streaming through the Internet gateway, all applications that depend on that are at risk of slow-down. Patient care is our priority and we need to ensure that our core services have the capacity they need to run as expected.
